Event Details

This all-day event will bring together academics responsible for educating mathematics students at our universities and the employers who will one day employ these students.

Mathematical sciences play a direct and fundamental role in our lives. Quantitative analytical skills are vital to any national skills agenda and to the needs of employers.

Participants in this workshop will be given a chance to examine resources developed recently by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and in the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary. The workshop will provide impetus for improving these resources and sharing them so that they are useful to mathematics and science departments in many universities.

A common aim of the resources is to show where mathematics is used in different careers. An important part of this is to make explicit links from the higher education mathematics curriculum to applications in science, technology, business and industry.

There will also be a chance for employers of maths graduates to record their views for a DVD entitled "What do you believe is required from maths graduates?". This is an opportunity to promote your company and industry to students who may not have thought of working for you. The mpeg produced will be seen by a good deal of Queen Mary's maths students as well as at other universities and higher education institutions who are working with Queen Mary on this initiative.
